Lake - Clatto

Clatto Reservoir is a 9 hectare, former drinking water supply reservoir located on the outskirts of the city of Dundee in Scotland. In recent years, the reservoir has been used for a variety of recreational purposes, however blue green algal blooms during summer months have become more common, causing the reservoir to be closed for extended periods of time due to concerns about public health and safety

Keen to find a solution to this problem, the Dundee City Council commissioned an application of Phoslock in early 2009. The application took place on the 4th and 5th of March 2009 and involved the application of 24 tonnes of Phoslock to the reservoir.

The aim of the application was to remove the immediately and potentially bio-available phosphorus from both the water column and sediments of the reservoir so that there would be less phosphorus available for further algal growth. The results of the application have been impressive and in 2009 the reservoir remained open to the public for the first time in several years during the peak summer period of June to August as a result of substantially lower blue green algal cell counts.
